Highwood Pass Cycling Mini-Tour - Complete! 318kms over 3 days
There was a request for an update when I completed my first multi-day ride, so here it is: This past weekend, I did the Highwood Pass mini-tour, the route for which folks made suggestions here. I went clockwise from Bridgeland to Turner Valley to Highwood Pass to Kanaskis Village and took the Trans-Canada back to Calgary. Approximate Route. I overnighted in Turner Valley and Kananaskis Village. Turner Valley was a bit too close to Calgary, going to Longview on the first would have been better, and shaved some distance off of Day 2. I also regretted taking Range Road 31. Gravel rollers were not a tonne of fun in the rain on Saturday morning. Day 2's breakfast was at a homestead/food truck called "The Back 40" adjacent to the Greenford Provincial Recreation Area that had some of the best pancakes I've ever had. Highwood was busy with cyclists enjoying the last weekend before highway 40 opens to car traffic. I am bad at climbing. I went full feed-bag to try and get enough fuel and it helped a bit, but the south approach is a grind. Rest stops were had. Breakfast on Sunday at Stoney Nakota was a welcome respite from the driving rain, and a great deal for $10. Net downhill coming back to Calgary was awesome, and despite the road noise and road spray, I actually didn't mind the Trans-Canada. (I was already totally soaked through, water from passing cars wasn't a big deal.) I was mostly self-supported via seat-post bag, though I cheated a bit when my partner met me out at Kananaskis for the Saturday overnight and brought cold-weather gear for the 7 degree ride back on Sunday morning. I would do it again, and next time I'll try to cut out one overnight. Maybe go counter-clockwise and carry camping gear and stay in the Mount Kidd area?

There are flights just after sunrise and just before sunset, but if you’re going out to High River for just one night, try to make it to the “night glow” events.
